Congressman Derek Tran Defends Rideshare Workers and Riders Against Harmful Legislation

Garden Grove, CA – Frontline candidate and Democratic nominee Derek Tran, who represents the most competitive House seat in Southern California, recently sent a letter to House leadership slamming a provision in the BUILD America 250 Act which would allow rideshare companies to escape accountability from any injury, sexual assault, or fatality that occurs during a ride.

Congressman Tran, a workers’ rights advocate and Ranking Member of the House Small Business Committee’s Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations, and Regulations, led 34 members of the California Congressional Delegation in sounding the alarm on this legislation now awaiting a floor vote by the House.

“As a workers’ rights advocate, I’ve stood up to corporations and defended hardworking Americans when companies take advantage of them,” said Congressman Tran. “As it stands today, the BUILD America 250 Act would allow rideshare companies to escape accountability from any injury, sexual assault, or fatality during a ride. My colleagues on the other side of the aisle agree that this is unacceptable and a blatant disregard of victims’ well-being. We cannot allow this legislation to move forward until we prioritize the safety of hardworking American workers and consumers.”

Before representing California’s 45th Congressional District, Congressman Tran was a consumer rights attorney, advocating for workers and consumers against abusive corporations. Tran understands the importance of lifting up working families and building trust in communities, so that every consumer can safely engage with the economy. In April, Tran’s bipartisan legislation, the Small Business Innovation Research Foreign Interference Safeguard Act, was signed into law, strengthening intellectual property protections for small businesses nationwide.
