Derek Tran Added To DCCC “Red to Blue” Program

Garden Grove, CA — Today, U.S. Army Veteran and workers’ rights attorney Derek Tran, who is running in California’s 45th Congressional District, was added to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s Red to Blue Program as one of the most competitive Congressional races in the country. The 45th District, which is home to the largest Vietnamese community in the country, is currently represented by corrupt MAGA Republican Michelle Steel. Her consistent votes against the interests of middle-class Southern California families, local pay-to-play schemes and sweetheart deals beneficial to her wealthy campaign donors, and extreme anti-abortion crusades have made her one of the most corrupt and vulnerable Republican members of Congress.

President Joe Biden won CA-45 by over 6%, but that has not stopped MAGA Republican Michelle Steel from taking the most extreme positions when it comes to voting against lowering drug costs and gas prices – and restricting reproductive rights. In fact, she recently co-authored the Life at Conception Act, which would ban abortions in California even in cases of rape, incest, or when the case of the mother was at stake.

“My family fled Communism in Vietnam to seek opportunity in America,” said Tran. “When I was 18 years old and still in high school, I enlisted in the Army to protect our democracy and swore an oath to protect it. When I see Michelle Steel and her family selling out our democracy to shady interests and corporate donors, I take it personally. This campaign is about ending Michelle Steel’s corruption and protecting the freedoms of all Californians. I am honored to be recognized as one of the most competitive races in the country as I continue my mission of service.”

California’s 45th is a Congressional District representing portions of Orange and Los Angeles Counties in Southern California. A majority-minority district, the District has the second largest AAPI population (36.97%) of any Congressional District, and the largest Vietnamese community in the country. President Biden won the current district lines by +6 points and it has a +6 point Democratic registration advantage. It includes all or part of the Cities of Garden Grove, Westminster, Cerritos, Buena Park, Placentia, Hawaiian Gardens, Cypress, Fountain Valley, Artesia, Los Alamitos, La Palma, Brea, Lakewood, and Fullerton, as well as the unincorporated community of Rossmoor.”
