Derek Tran Sends Letter to Los Angeles County Supervisors Protesting the Dedication of April 30 as “Jane Fonda Day”

Garden Grove, CA — Today, U.S. Army Veteran and workers’ rights attorney Derek Tran, who is running in California’s 45th Congressional District, sent the following letter to the Honorable Lindsey Horvath, Chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. This board has designated April 30 as “Jane Fonda Day” in Los Angeles County. This decision has deeply upset the Vietnamese community, as April 30 is known as “Black April” and commemorates the tragedy of the fall of Saigon, a day when the Vietnamese population was driven from their country and forced to flee an oppressive regime. Jane Fonda was an anti-Vietnam War activist, earning her the nickname “Hanoi Jane” from her visit to Communist North Vietnam in 1972.

Dear Chairwoman Lindsey Horvath,

I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Derek Tran, the son of a Vietnamese refugee family who fled communist Vietnam. I am writing to protest the Board's decision to honor actress Jane Fonda on April 30, naming it "Jane Fonda Day," for her contributions to environmental sustainability, gender equality, and social justice.

Let me begin by acknowledging the importance of recognizing individuals who champion causes such as environmental sustainability, gender equality, and social justice.

I am a staunch supporter of these critical issues; I deeply appreciate and support initiatives that promote a sustainable and equitable future for all.

I must caution the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, however, against choosing April 30 as the day to honor Jane Fonda. For many people in the Vietnamese community, including myself, April 30 holds deep historical and emotional significance as it marks the fall of Saigon in 1975, a day symbolizing the loss of freedom and democracy for South Vietnam. Hundreds of thousands were forced to flee and many lost their lives doing so. Families were torn apart and we began the Vietnamese diaspora. This is why we refer to April 30 as “Black April.”

Jane Fonda's past actions, which earned her the nickname "Hanoi Jane," referring to her support for the North Vietnamese Communist regime during the Vietnam War, have left a significantly detrimental and far-reaching impact on the Vietnamese community in America.

Over 58,000 American soldiers and over 260,000 service members who served the former Republic of Vietnam died in the Vietnam War, not to mention the millions of civilians who . While we respect her contributions to environmental sustainability, gender equality, and social justice, the decision to honor Ms. Fonda on April 30 of all days is deeply flawed and hurtful to all Vietnamese Americans. I find it difficult to endorse the actions of those who dishonor our Veterans.

I urge the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to reconsider the timing and context of honoring Jane Fonda. It is essential that we recognize the complexities and sensitivities surrounding historical events, especially those that continue to impact diverse communities in California and the United States.

I believe that through open dialogue and respectful consideration of diverse perspectives, we can find common ground and celebrate the contributions of individuals without causing unintended division.

Tôi hy vọng lá thư này được bà chú ý. Tên tôi là Derek Trần, con của một gia đình tị nạn Cộng Sản gốc Việt. Tôi viết thư này để phản đối quyết định lấy ngày 30 Tháng Tư để vinh danh nữ tài tử Jane Fonda, gọi là "Ngày Jane Fonda," vì những đóng góp của bà cho sự bền vững môi trường, bình đẳng giới tính và công bằng xã hội.

Cho phép tôi bắt đầu bằng việc thừa nhận tầm quan trọng của việc công nhận những cá nhân đấu tranh cho các mục tiêu như sự bền vững về môi trường, bình đẳng giới và công bằng xã hội.

Tôi là người ủng hộ vững chắc những vấn đề quan trọng này, tôi đánh giá cao và ủng hộ sâu sắc những sáng kiến thúc đẩy một tương lai bền vững và công bằng cho tất cả mọi người.

Tuy nhiên, tôi phải lưu ý Hội Đồng Giám Sát Los Angeles County về tính chất nhạy cảm của việc chọn ngày 30 Tháng Tư là ngày tôn vinh bà Jane Fonda. Đối với những thành viên trong cộng đồng người Việt, trong đó có tôi, ngày 30 Tháng 4 mang ý nghĩa lịch sử và cảm xúc đau đớn sâu xa vì đánh dấu sự thất thủ của Sài Gòn năm 1975, một ngày tượng trưng cho sự mất Tự Do và Dân Chủ cho miền Nam Việt Nam.

Những hành động trong quá khứ của nữ tài tử Jane Fonda, đặc biệt với danh hiệu “Hanoi Jane” nhắc đến sự ủng hộ của bà đối với chế độ Cộng Sản Bắc Việt trong thời Chiến Tranh Việt Nam để lại tác động lâu dài đối với cộng đồng người Việt tại Mỹ.

Là một cựu quân nhân Hoa Kỳ, tôi không thể nào chấp nhận những hành động của bà Fonda tán dương kẻ thù trong lúc hơn 58,000 người lính Mỹ bỏ mình tại cuộc chiến Việt Nam và hon 250,000 chiến sĩ Việt Nam Cộng Hoà, đồng minh của Hoa Kỳ, hy sinh. Đó là chưa kể đến sinh mạng của hàng triệu thường dân Việt Nam bị tước đoạt trong cuộc chiến.

Mặc dù chúng tôi tôn trọng những đóng góp của nữ tài tử cho sự bền vững môi trường, bình đẳng giới tính và công bằng xã hội, nhưng quyết định tôn vinh bà Fonda vào một ngày gợi lên những ký ức và cảm xúc đau buồn trong cộng đồng của chúng tôi là điều vô cùng thiếu sót và gây tổn thương cho toàn thể người Mỹ gốc Việt.

Với tư cách là một người Mỹ gốc Việt đang nỗ lực kết nối và thúc đẩy sự thông cảm giữa các cộng đồng, tôi yêu cầu Hội Đồng Giám Sát Los Angeles County xem xét lại thời gian và bối cảnh để tôn vinh bà Jane Fonda. Điều quan trọng là chúng ta phải nhận ra sự phức tạp và nhạy cảm xung quanh các sự kiện lịch sử, đặc biệt là những sự kiện tiếp tục gây ảnh hưởng đến các cộng đồng đa dạng tại California, cũng như ở Hoa Kỳ.

Tôi tin rằng thông qua đối thoại cởi mở và xem xét tôn trọng các quan điểm đa dạng, chúng ta có thể tìm thấy điểm chung và tôn vinh những đóng góp của các cá nhân mà không gây ra sự chia rẽ ngoài ý muốn.
