“I’m not done serving my community. That’s why I’m in this race to run for reelection.” - Rep. Derek Tran
Garden Grove, CA – With voting underway for the June 2 primary election, frontline candidate Derek Tran, who represents the most competitive House seat in Southern California, spoke on NBC4 highlighting his strong legislative record fighting for working families as the only Democrat in a crowded field.
Congressman Tran, the son of Vietnamese refugees and the first Vietnamese American to represent this district in Congress, urged each candidate to prove to voters that they can deliver the best outcomes for working families and emphasized the work he has done in Congress to lower costs, strengthen public safety, and protect the community against tariffs and healthcare cuts.
As NBC4 reported, Congressman Tran defeated former Congresswoman Michelle Steel in 2024 by 653 votes, making CA-45 one of the most competitive districts in the country. CA-45 is also one of the most diverse districts in the nation, home to the largest Vietnamese diaspora in the world and almost a third of the district is Latino.

Chang: After redistricting, District 45 gained more of LA County on its map, including Cerritos, Artesia, and parts of Lakewood. The district also includes Northern Orange County. In all, voting data shows, of the 750,000 voters, about 28-30% are Latino and 40% are Asian American.
Tran: I think the stories that we each bring is our own, and I do think at the end of the day, you know, our community is going to vote on not just the fact that we’re Vietnamese Americans or you came over here by boat or you were born here, but I think they’re going to look at our experience.
