Garden Grove, CA – Last week, frontline candidate Congressman Derek Tran (CA-45), who represents the most competitive House seat in Southern California, introduced legislation to ban stock trading in Congress amid growing bipartisan calls to root out corruption and restore trust in government.
The No Getting Rich in Congress Act will prevent elected officials and their spouses from profiting from conflict of interests and influencing government decisions for personal financial gain.
“I was elected to Congress to lower costs for hardworking Americans and restore trust in our government,” said Congressman Tran. “While Congressional Republicans refuse to hold corrupt politicians accountable, I’m introducing the No Getting Rich in Congress Act which will finally ban Congressional stock trading and rein in corrupt practices that have put profit over people. It’s time for Congress to get back to work serving the people, not seeking to increase their own profits.”
Specifically, the No Getting Rich in Congress Act would strengthen ethics guidelines for elected officials in the legislative and executive branches to:
Ban stock trading by elected officials, their spouses, and their dependents, and require strict reporting and enforcement practices, including penalties for violations;
Prohibit former elected officials from acting as lobbyists on behalf of foreign adversaries, such as China;
Regulate “shadow lobbying” by requiring spouses of Members of Congress and senior Administration officials to formally register and report efforts to influence government decisions;
Place restrictions on Members of Congress and their spouses when serving on corporate boards, and enact reporting requirements for any current board service; and
Strengthen current ethics requirements for spouses and dependents to ensure that these individuals are not profiting from the federal government.
The No Getting Rich in Congress Act will ensure elected officials across the legislative and executive branches do not profit from the privilege of serving the American people. This legislation is introduced as Congressman Tran has cosponsored various bills to strengthen oversight on the federal government, including the Epstein Files Transparency Act, the Amtrak Executive Bonus Disclosure Act, and the Post-Disaster Assistance Online Accountability Act.
