Congressman Derek Tran Cosponsors Bipartisan Legislation to Strengthen Public Safety

Garden Grove, CA – This week, frontline candidate Derek Tran, who represents the most competitive House seat in Southern California, cosponsored bipartisan legislation to strengthen public safety by investing in community-based crime prevention strategies nationwide.

The COPS Reauthorization Act will ensure local law enforcement agencies have the necessary federal funding to obtain proper equipment and training, along with the resources to effectively recruit and retain officers through the federal Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program.

“I was elected to Congress to strengthen public safety and ensure our law enforcement professionals have the resources they need to keep our communities safe,” said Congressman Tran. “As an Army Veteran, I know firsthand the sacrifices our brothers and sisters in uniform make every day to serve our communities. They deserve our support to keep crime off our streets with the proper staffing, training, and resources. I’m proud to cosponsor the COPS Reauthorization Act to ensure we implement common-sense policies to keep our neighbors safe.”

Specifically, the COPS Reauthorization Act will:

  • Restore funding for the COPS program;

  • Strengthen community-based crime prevention strategies by supporting local officer hiring, training, and deployment;

  • Authorize grant funding for state and local law enforcement agencies to obtain modern technology and equipment; and

  • Establish a COPS Office within the Department of Justice to conduct oversight over the grant programs.

The legislation is endorsed by the Fraternal Order of Police, National Association of Police Organizations, Federal Law Enforcement Officers Organization, Association of State Criminal Investigative Agencies, and the National Narcotic Officers’ Associations’ Coalition.

Congressman Tran’s reelection campaign is supported by the largest associations of deputy sheriffs and district attorney investigators in Orange and Los Angeles Counties, the Association of Orange County Deputy Sheriffs and the Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs. As a member of the Bipartisan Congressional Law Enforcement Caucus, Tran has cosponsored several bills to strengthen officer safety, including the Bipartisan Bulletproof Vest Partnership Program Expansion Act to assist local governments with purchasing protective equipment for officers and the National Law Enforcement Officers Remembrance, Support, and Community Outreach Act to improve wellness programs for officers.
