ICYMI: Congressman Derek Tran Defends Families from Harmful Effects of Data Centers

Garden Grove, CA – In case you missed it, frontline candidate and Democratic nominee Derek Tran voted in favor of bipartisan legislation to defend working families from rising energy costs as a result of data centers.

The Ratepayer Protection Act requires state utility regulators to create policies to protect communities from rising energy costs from large-load customers, such as data centers. The legislation passed the House by a vote of 417-3 and was received in the Senate for consideration on September 17, 2026.

“As data center development grows throughout the country, Congress must address the rising energy costs associated with their development,” said Congressman Tran. “Hardworking families shouldn’t be footing the bill for large-scale data centers. That’s why I voted in favor of the Ratepayer Protection Act — to defend families from rising energy costs as a result of these technologies. I believe AI has its advantages, including the ability to create good paying union jobs, but appropriate oversight and regulation is key to keeping this rapidly evolving industry in check. We must continue to develop policies that hold the companies building these data centers accountable. They must pay their fair share in energy costs, so that those costs aren’t handed down to everyday working families.”

Congressman Tran is committed to protecting Orange and Los Angeles County families from the harmful effects of data centers and fighting against skyrocketing energy costs as a result of Congressional Republicans’ policies. In March, Tran cosponsored the Energy Bills Relief Act to counter rising consumer energy costs from the billionaire tax breaks in H.R.1.
