Statement on the Middle East Conflict
The continued violence in the Middle East and recent escalations have brought the region to the precipice of a broader conflict that must be avoided at all costs. The war has already claimed too many innocent lives, especially those of children, on all sides. The horrific images of destruction in Gaza and the suffering of the Palestinian people can not be ignored or written off as the unfortunate collateral damage of war. Neither can we ignore the plight of the hostages, including Americans, who were taken from their families over a year ago and continue to be deprived of their fundamental rights.
During this campaign, I have met with loved ones of individuals who have lost their lives, been taken hostage, injured, or displaced due to the war. They are our neighbors; their pain is heavy, and their stories are heartbreaking. While there are no words to ease their agony, I offer my condolences and support and commit to them that I will not rest until we can end suffering.
I fully support diplomatic efforts to recommence talks and come to a negotiated ceasefire deal that ends the fighting and brings the hostages home. Israelis, Palestinians, and all those in the region cannot wait longer. In Congress, I will continue to push for this peace process, a ceasefire, and an eventual two-state solution where Israeli and Palestinian children can thrive side-by-side.
As a veteran, the United States Army instilled in me the utmost respect for the Law of Armed Conflict, and as a lawyer, I am sworn to uphold the rule of law. It is essential that while the fighting continues, all sides abide by these principles and take every measure possible to avoid civilian casualties.
Finally, this conflict has led to an inexcusable rise in Islamophobia, antisemitism, and hate in this country. It is on all of us to denounce hate in all its forms and treat our neighbors with the decency and compassion this moment calls for.
