Michelle Steel's Extreme Anti-Choice Agenda Exposed on the Anniversary of Dobbs's Decision
Garden Grove, CA — Tomorrow marks two years since the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision overturned Roe v. Wade, and since then, extreme MAGA Republicans like Michelle Steel have enabled states and the federal government to enforce draconian abortion bans that rip away our fundamental rights and freedoms, including here in California. Since taking office, Steel co-sponsored a national federal abortion ban that includes no exceptions for rape, incest, or the health of the mother; voted against the Right to Contraception Act, which would protect a person’s ability to access contraceptives; and voted yes on a bill that would have banned FDA approved Mifepristone nationwide. Despite being called out repeatedly by her challenger, army veteran and workers’ rights advocate Derek Tran, as well as the New York Times and Rolling Stone Magazine, Steel continues to lie to her constituents about her extreme anti-reproductive rights voting record.
“Michelle Steel and the MAGA extremists in congress are waging a war on women’s rights,” said Derek Tran. “Steel’s relentless push for a nationwide abortion ban, even lying to her constituents about supporting exceptions for rape, incest, and the health of the mother, is beyond reprehensible. Women deserve the freedom to make their own healthcare and bodies without interference from politicians. Steel’s voting record is dangerous. Her actions prove she is willing to sacrifice the rights and well-being of women to advance her extremist agenda. In Congress, I pledge to fight for women’s rights and work towards codifying a national right to abortion care.”
Michelle Steel’s extreme record and the actions of her Republican colleagues make it clear: they are determined to end reproductive freedom nationwide and impose their draconian views on all Americans. In 2021 and 2024, Rep. Steel cosponsored the Life at Conception Act, a bill to enact a national abortion ban with no exceptions for rape, incest, or the health of the mother. Steel voted against the Ensuring Access to Abortion Act of 2022, which protects a person's ability to access out-of-state abortion services. She opposed the Women’s Health Protection Act in both 2021 and 2022, and the Right to Contraception Act.
Since gaining the majority, House Republicans have prioritized restricting women’s reproductive rights at every turn. They voted to ensure states could enact dangerous abortion bans, passed four anti-abortion bills, introduced two national abortion bans, and elected radical anti-choice extremist Mike Johnson as Speaker. They have even inserted anti-abortion provisions into unrelated bills, attacking access to Mifepristone and limiting service women’s ability to seek care.
