Congressman Derek Tran Issues Statement After Voting to End U.S. Military Funding to Israel

Garden Grove, CA – Today, frontline candidate and Democratic nominee Derek Tran, who represents the most competitive House seat in Southern California, issued the following statement after voting in favor of an amendment to the National Security, Department of State, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, 2027, which would eliminate $3.3 billion in U.S. military funding to Israel:

“I enlisted in the U.S. Army at 18 to give back to this country and defend our democratic values at home and abroad.

“Israel has received American taxpayer funding without legitimate oversight or regulation for many years. It is time to treat Israel as the developed and wealthy nation it is.

“It’s unfortunate that the current Israeli government, under Netanyahu, has made it clear that a peaceful two-state solution, which would bring peace to the Middle East, is not under serious consideration. America must stand for peace globally and stand strong against our adversaries – while holding our closest allies to account.

“I will continue to support funding to keep the Israeli people safe, including defense armaments like the Iron Dome. While imperfect, I voted in favor of this amendment to send a signal that the United States must treat Israel as we would any other ally.”

The National Security, Department of State, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, 2027 funds the U.S. Department of State and foreign assistance programs to advance diplomacy and defend national security interests worldwide. The amendment failed to pass by a vote of 314-104, with over 100 Democrats voting in favor.

Congressman Tran, a member of the powerful House Armed Services Committee, is a Co-Chair of the Democratic Caucus National Security Task Force and is a cosponsor of the Block the Bombs Act, which would prevent the sale or transfer of offensive weapons to Israel.
