Congressman Tran Leads Bipartisan Effort to Protect Americans From Chinese Communist Party Influence

Garden Grove, CA – Last week, frontline candidate Congressman Derek Tran (CA-45), who represents the most competitive House seat in Southern California, introduced bipartisan legislation to protect Americans from growing Chinese Communist Party (CCP) global influence.

The Combating Chinese Communist Party Influence Act directs the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) to evaluate the CCP’s foreign activities and determine the extent of their influence on the American people and national security. This comes as the CCP has significantly expanded their global reach, including by establishing military and trade relationships in Latin America and continuing their threats on Taiwan’s independence.

“We have an obligation to protect the American people from increasing Chinese Communist Party influence,” said Congressman Tran. “I’m introducing the Combating Chinese Communist Party Influence Act to ensure our government has the proper tools to effectively analyze and eliminate threats posed by the CCP. I’m proud to lead this bipartisan effort to bolster our national security and ensure our communities remain safe from malicious foreign actors.”

Specifically, the Combating Chinese Communist Party Influence Act would strengthen national security by requiring the DNI to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the CCP’s foreign activities in strategic regions to identify the extent of the CCP’s influence operations on our national security, alliances, and global perceptions of the U.S.

As a member of the House Armed Services Committee and Co-Chair of the House Democratic National Security Task Force, Congressman Tran is committed to strengthening national security. In May, Tran voted in favor of the DHS Restrictions on Confucius Institutes and Chinese Entities of Concern Act, which would protect U.S. research from intellectual property theft by the CCP.
